IEM FY18 Funding Program

The Institute for Engineering in Medicine is excited to announce our request for proposals for the FY18 IEM Seed Funding Program. This year we are accepting applications for four funding programs: The IEM Group Program, IEM Exploratory, and IEM Working Group Grants, as well as the new IEM Industry Match Grant. All programs will have a submission deadline of January 17th, 2018 at 4:00 PM. Below are quick summaries for each award and appended you will find complete application guidelines for each mechanism.

FY18 RFP

IEM Group Program Grant

The IEM Group Program Grant provides up to $60,000 in funds to develop multidisciplinary collaborative research programs from a group of investigators of the Academic Health Center (AHC) and College of Science and Engineering (CSE). These programs are intended to position groups to seek program/center/group external funding, while supporting significant medical and health research using engineering approaches.

IEM Exploratory Grant

The IEM Exploratory Grant Program provides up to $35,000 in funds to support interdisciplinary research projects exploring novel ideas relating to medical and engineering research. Proposals should involve fundamental or translational science, with a specific hypothesis or deliverable that can produce pilot data to secure external funding or produce intellectual property. This mechanism should involve at least one AHC/CSE investigator with a co-investigator from the other entity (i.e. CSE/AHC).

IEM Working Group

In order to encourage the development of research across campus, IEM will make available $6,000 in funds for faculty groups to come together to develop collaborations in a focused area. While groups addressing research within IEM's core themes are particularly encouraged proposals covering new themes are also open for consideration.

IEM Industry Match

These grants serve to seed the development of new collaborations between IEM faculty and industry. They provide up to $35,000 IEM matching funds (1:1) for sponsored projects from industrial partners. The industry match can occur through MNIP* or other UM contract mechanism. *https://research.umn.edu/units/techcomm/sponsoring-research-mn-ip
